Maricopa County Holds Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for New Intake, Transfer and Release Facility
Phoenix, Arizona – Maricopa County’s new Intake, Transfer, and Release Facility (ITR) finished construction. On February 19, officials, Board Members, teammates and community members gathered at the new detention facility for the ribbon cutting and celebrated the momentous milestone achieved. In 2015, the plan for a new ITR detention facility was approved. In 2017, progress continued and construction began. Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office staff received the keys to the facility in early February 2020 and plan to officially open the facility in April.
What’s Inside
The 485,000-square-foot facility features:
- A 1,280-bed jail meant for long-term stays, which will replace the aging Durango Jail
- A new 512-bed holding area for those expected to be released within 72 hours
- A central intake facility, which will replace the current facility at the 4th Avenue Jail downtown
- Four courtrooms, which will allow the County accommodate court appearances on site
A More Efficient, Effective Approach for Maricopa
Maricopa is the fourth largest county by population in the U.S. and intakes more than 300 people per day. The inflexible design of the previous intake center was ill equipped to handle these numbers, resulting in 4+ hour processing times. In comparison, the new facility has an open seating design for over 230 people and an improved layout, which will drastically improve efficiency, leading to reduced wait times and allowing the arresting officer back on the street within 30 minutes, saving valuable taxpayer dollars.
Maricopa’s new, centrally located ITR houses four fully functional courtrooms, judges’ chambers, and administrative and staff support areas. This will allow for fewer transfers and increased savings for the county.
CGL developed the architectural program and space list for the entire 485,000-SF facility and the schematic and design development level floor plans for the 512-bed facility. CGL also provided design assistance through construction documents.
