Tuolumne County Unveils New Sheriff J.H. Dambacher Detention Center
On October 27, Tuolumne County officially completed construction on the new Sheriff J.H. ‘Jack’ Dambacher Detention Center. County officials and members of the project teams attended the ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the momentous occasion.*
Located at the Law and Justice Center off Old Wards Ferry Road in Sonora, Cali., the new $50-million, 63,000 square ft. detention facility is nearly two times the size of the County’s existing 60-year-old jail in downtown Sonora, which has long faced issues of overcrowding and lack of space for important support services and programs.
The new facility aims to solve those issues. In addition to being able to house up to 230 individuals, compared to 144 at the existing jail, the new facility features dedicated support space for food, laundry services, medical, storage and programs. The increased space will allow the County to provide better programs, supporting its efforts to reduce the recidivism rate.
CGL, in association with Lionakis, provided architectural services for both the design and construction phases of the new Sheriff J.H. Dambacher Detention Center.

*Tuesday’s ribbon cutting ceremony was invitation-only and those in attendance were required to wear masks, undergo temperature checks, and practice social distancing.
